Francis Gene Moore, age 83, passed away on October 28, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born November 7, 1936 to the late Herbert and Nettie Rose Moore in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was one of four children with one brother, the late Herbert Moore Jr. “Bootsie” and wife Helen of Seabrook, NH and two sisters Jackie Moore Griffies and late husband John “Tommy” Griffies of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Joanna Moore Ruff and husband David of Redlands, CA. 

He was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School where he played football. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Army. When he returned from service, he continued his career at Champion International, where he worked for 39 years until retirement. 

He also worked as a carpenter with his father for many years. Gene was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. He loved spending his summer weekends on Lake Gaston in the company of family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Greg Moore. 

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carol Whitby Moore. He is also survived by two sons, Neal Moore and wife Barbara of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Mike Moore and wife Robin of Margarettsville, NC, and a daughter-in-law, Leigh Moore of Roanoke Rapids, NC. 

Gene had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, Brandon Moore and wife Kelly, Wyatt Moore, Atalee Moore Jones and husband Mark, Emily Moore, Kenley Moore and great-granddaughter, Cheslee Moore.  

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 31st from 11-11:45 am at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids. A graveside service will immediately follow at 12 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. 

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter 3800 Shamrock Drive Charlotte, NC 28215-3220 in honor of his wife, Carol Whitby Moore.
