Roanoke Rapids Graded School District continues to thrive with outstanding student achievements, remarkable educational opportunities, and exciting events that highlight the excellence of our schools.

This past week has been filled with celebrations of student success, professional collaboration, and community engagement. Here’s a look at the latest highlights from our RRGSD!

Welcoming Future School Leaders

RRGSD was honored to host a visit from the North Carolina State Principal Fellows’ Program’s NELA cohort.

These future school leaders were greeted by fellow NELA graduates, Superintendent Dr. Julie Thompson and RRHS Assistant Principal Candi Horton, before engaging with our school leaders. RRHS Principal Tom Davis, RREC Principal Jance Moody, and RRHS Assistant Principal Jen Ott shared insights about leadership and education before the cohort had the opportunity to visit classrooms at RRHS and RREC.

We were particularly proud of our student speakers, Jakireon Cooper and Josiah Ausby, who eloquently spoke about student life at their respective schools. We are grateful that the NELA group chose to spend time on our campuses and witness the vibrant learning environment at RRGSD!

RRHS Shines at the NCASC State Convention

The North Carolina Association of Student Councils (NCASC) 2025 State Convention was a momentous occasion for Roanoke Rapids High School. Congratulations to Makenna Whitley, who was elected as the NCASC Eastern District Chair, and Alyssa Keeter, who was named the NCASC First Vice President for the 2025-2026 school year.

Additionally, four RRHS students—Lydia Carroll, Michael Webb, Alexis Coffield, and Lee Hantz—earned a place in the prestigious NCASC Hall of Fame.

Our dedicated Student Council advisors also received well-deserved recognition. Kelly Sparks was named NCASC Advisor of the Year, and Gary Edwards was appointed the NCASC Eastern Director. This level of achievement speaks volumes about the dedication of our students and staff. Congratulations to all!

Chaloner Middle School Quiz Bowl Team Competes at State

The Chaloner Middle School Quiz Bowl team, made up of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade AIG students, showcased their knowledge and competitive spirit this season.

After an impressive season of virtual matches against teams across the state, our students competed in the regional tournament in Rocky Mount, placing second and advancing to the state competition in Greensboro. Facing top teams in the state, our students performed remarkably well, finishing in fifth place overall! We are incredibly proud of their dedication, teamwork, and intellectual prowess.

Emergency Medical Responder Success

Our Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses continue to provide invaluable skills to our students.

Recently, six RRHS students successfully passed the NC OEMS Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) credentialing exam. Congratulations to Kinslee Floyd, Sabrina Butler, Madalynn Patrick, Kalieb Finney, Elaina Shearin, and Trinidad Magana on earning this critical certification. This accomplishment reflects their hard work and the outstanding instruction of their teacher, Lynn Moseley.

We also extend congratulations to our scholarship and award recipients: Kassidie Pleasant received the Noah Joyner, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Dennis Bradford was awarded the Scholastic Achievement Medal, and Gabriel Godfrey earned the General Military Excellence Medal. Way to go, Cadets!

RREC Student to Attend National Youth Tour

A special congratulations goes out to Jackson Taylor, a student at RREC, who has been selected by our local electric cooperative to participate in the North Carolina Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.! This week-long, all-expenses-paid leadership experience will allow Jackson to explore our nation’s capital, engage with policymakers, and network with other young leaders from across the country. What an incredible opportunity!

Duke Energy Science Night at Belmont Elementary

Science lovers, mark your calendars! Belmont Elementary School will be hosting the Duke Energy Science Night on Thursday, April 10, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. This event will provide students and their families with an opportunity to explore STEM through engaging hands-on activities, including magnetic paintings, ring glider tests, and straw flute creations. We hope to see many families come out to celebrate the wonders of science together!

Clara Hearne Pre-K Brings Joy to Pine Forest Rest Home

Our youngest learners at Clara Hearne Pre-Kindergarten Center recently spread joy and laughter by spending a special day with residents at Pine Forest Rest Home. The “BEST DAY EVER” included singing, reading stories, a fashion show, and sharing a meal together. The heartwarming connections between our students and the residents exemplify the power of kindness and community.

From academic competitions and leadership recognitions to community engagement and hands-on learning, it has been an exciting time in RRGSD. Thank you to our students, staff, and families for making our district a place of excellence. Until next time, Yellow Jackets—keep striving for greatness! Together We Succeed!
