When North Carolina’s Fourth Provincial Congress met in Halifax in April 1776, they sounded the alarm the American colony should demand independence from England.

Halifax Muster Days on September 26 and 27 will recreate the military action as British General Cornwallis marched through town.

The Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps will kick-off events, leading a 10 a.m. parade down King Street, and will offer concerts that Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Market Square will be the focal point of the event with a Revolutionary War skirmish taking place at 2 p.m. on both days.

Periodically, visitors can experience infantry drill and musket firing demonstrations, artillery firing demonstrations and various living history demonstrations in the camps. Presentations on the American Revolution with Halifax connections will be shared in the auditorium and visitor center at 1 p.m. both days.

Saturday’s Revolutionary War Edged Weapons in North Carolina, by Hank Brown, and Sunday’s The Case of Michael Quinn, by Chris Grimes, will give life to the events and people recorded on history’s pages. Tours of historic buildings, historic crafts and living history demonstrations will be shared.

Weaving, sewing, woodworking, camp fire cooking necessary for survival, and printing press skills, toys and games necessary for enrichment, all will be shown.

Food will be available to purchase also. The turbulence and triumphs of the first 85 years of Halifax history are recalled in the site’s preservation, whose buildings date from about 1760 to the 1830s.

The site preserves and interprets the history of Halifax, where North Carolina led the nation in gaining independence from Great Britain.

The event is part of the It’s Revolutionary! commemoration which will include more than 20 events through 2016. Historic Halifax is at 25 Saint David St., Halifax, NC, 27839.
