Dexter Devon Taylor, wanted in the June 22 Enfield murder of Jarshamel Cambridge, is in custody in Halifax County after his arrest in Rocky Mount around midnight Saturday.

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said this afternoon it is not clear how long Taylor may have been in Rocky Mount, but it was thought early in the investigation he was traveling between Enfield and the Nash County city.

In a statement the sheriff said Taylor, 22, was arrested by Rocky Mount Police Department following a brief foot chase.

Police there conducted a vehicle stop in which Taylor was a passenger.

Upon stopping the vehicle, Taylor exited and ran. He was caught and turned over to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office where he is being held without the opportunity for bond.

Rocky Mount police charged Taylor, 22, with resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.

The sheriff's office continues to look for Matthew Simms, 23, the last person wanted in the Cambridge murder, which has been described as a gang-related shooting where Cambridge was a victim of circumstance.

Tripp said investigators are following up on all leads concerning the whereabouts of Simms and anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-583-8201 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

A spokesperson for the Rocky Mount Police Department was not immediately available this afternoon.
