Vernon Bryant will remain chairman and Rives Manning vice chairman of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners.

“I will always give my very best in serving as chairman,” Bryant said after a unanimous vote reappointing him. “I want the public to know we have 560 employees. When you see these people out, give them a pat on the back … when you see them out, let them know you appreciate their hard work.”

Manning said he appreciated the unanimous support and told Bryant, “I do appreciate you. You're doing a good job. I do thank everybody for your support and we'll do the best we can.”

Rooks Recognition

Commissioner Marcelle Smith and rest of the board recognized Lieutenant Roy Rooks of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office and presented him a certificate of commendation.

The commendation was for a situation last month in which Rooks deployed his Taser to disarm a man who was cutting himself.

Edgewater golf carts

In another matter, commissioners agreed to take a request for the use of golf carts on roads within the Edgewater subdivision under advisement.

The community, located off Thelma Road, is requesting them for several uses which include a citizens on patrol; trash details; travel to and from the boat ramp area; access to other parts of the neighborhood; travel for teens to babysitting jobs; travel to take meals to sick neighbors or check on pets; trick-or-treating and the neighborhood Christmas parade.

Manning told Jerry Thompson of the Edgewater Property Owners Association the county would have to write an ordinance.

Commissioners agreed if an ordinance was drafted it would be only for Edgewater and not other parts of the county. The draft would be reviewed by the county attorney and sheriff.
