Monica Moody, a 31-year veteran of the state Historic Site in Halifax, was presented North Carolina's highest honor — the Order of the Long Leaf Pine — during today's county commissioners meeting.

State Senator Angela Bryant presented the order to Moody, who started at the Historic Halifax as a clerk typist and worked her way up to site manager.

Moody retired from the site on January 1.

Bryant said Moody, a Halifax County native, graduate of Northwest Halifax High School and Halifax Community College has helped the Historic Site thrive.

“Visiting England, where her mother was from, became her inspiration,” Bryant said before presenting Moody the order. “It was a large contributing factor to what she has done here.”

Moody helped bring about improvements to the historic jail, was instrumental in William R. Davie and Bradford Denton house projects as well as bringing Muster Days to Halifax. “Mostly, this award is for preservation of the site in the decline of government support,” Bryant said.

Moody thanked her staff. “I could not have done it without them.”

She said afterward she hoped to come back and do volunteer work at the site, especially since the Joseph Montfort Amphitheater is back in the county's hands. “I think (the Historic Site) is in really good shape to move forward.”
