A car careened into 51 Sycamore this afternoon causing significant damage to the Weldon restaurant.

Weldon Police Department Deputy Chief James Avens, along with state Highway Patrol troopers, estimated the speed of the car, which was coming into Weldon off the Rockfish Capital Bridge, to be between 60- to 65-miles per hour when the crash occurred.

The driver, whose name was not immediately known, was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

Avens said the driver was conscious following the crash. He said officers are still trying to determine why the driver crashed.

He estimated damage to the restaurant to be at least $250,000 if not more. There was a debris field of around 25 yards inside, which scattered into the bar area of the restaurant.
