A child flown to Vidant after an afternoon wreck on Interstate 95 escaped serious injury, the state Highway Patrol confirmed this evening.

Five other passengers in the recreational vehicle were all treated and released, the patrol said.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. in the northbound lane of the interstate when a sport utility vehicle cut the camper off near the 180 mile marker in the Pleasant Hill area, troopers said.

Chief Ed Porter Jr. of Gaston Fire and Rescue said in a statement firefighters found the RV overturned and all 10 occupants were outside. The SUV was found on its side with passenger side damage.

Vidant East Care landed on the interstate to take the child to Vidant in Greenville and the other five were taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center where they have since been released, troopers said.

Four other RV passengers and the driver of the SUV were assessed and released at the scene, Porter said in the statement.

The state Highway Patrol said the child received one staple to his head.

Porter said the intestate was closed to one lane of travel during the matter and firefighters remained on scene for nearly two hours.
