Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening made several special recognitions during its meeting.

First council honored Rick Gilstrap, former president and CEO of Halifax Regional, who came to Roanoke Rapids in 1982.
The Gilstraps are moving to Winston-Salem to be with grandchildren.
“We came here with one goal — to serve the people,” Gilstrap said after Mayor Emery Doughtie presented him and his wife with a resolution honoring them. “Roanoke Rapids, I want you to keep working hard. It’s going to be difficult for me to move.”

Roanoke Rapids police chief Chuck Hasty then presented his officers of the quarter — Jamie Hardy, Alex Green and Lieutenant Perry Parks.
Hasty recognized Officer Natara Velazquez and Sergeant Mark Peck for going above and beyond the call of duty for assisting a motorist on June 4.
He introduced Officer Joe Desare and recognized the department summer intern — Amanda Slauzis.
Fire Chief Stacy Coggins first recognized the following new firefighters:
Bruce Wells; Carter Rowland; Clayton Balmer; Jonathan Woodall and Darrell Sanders.
Coggins then recognized the following promotions:
Jared Lynch from firefighter to engineer; Darrell Miles from firefighter to engineer; Lee Vandeventer from driver-operator to engineer and Bryan Hollowell from engineer to lieutenant.
Meanwhile, Christina Caudle, main street development director, recognized the efforts of volunteers who helped the city’s Main Street program attain national accreditation. “Of the 98 actively designated North Carolina Main Street Cities and Small Towns, only 44 communities earned National Main Street Accreditation based on 2015 performance,” she said. “Roanoke Rapids has been nationally accredited since 2015.”
Caudle also recognized Titus Workman, publisher of the Roanoke Rapids Herald, as a Main Street Champion award recipient. “His contributions include publicly advocating for a formal partnership between Main Street Roanoke Rapids and the city of Roanoke Rapids, developing our signature Seafood & Shag fundraiser and creating Main Street Roanoke Rapids’ new branding and logo concept. Main Street Roanoke Rapids is eternally grateful for Titus Workman’s dedication to uptown and downtown revitalization,” Caudle said.
