He is also being booked on charges by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office said Nashem Malik Smith will face 10 counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, five counts of larceny, two counts of injury to personal property, one count of attempted breaking and entering a motor vehicle and one count of felony breaking and entering of a building.
Hall said the crimes allegedly committed by Smith occurred in a wide range of areas in the county which include Lakeview Park, Westwood Drive, West Tenth Street and others.
Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty said Smith was caught after a resident in the Long Circle area reportedly saw two people breaking into their vehicle and yelled at them. The alleged suspects ran from the area around 12:30 a.m.
Police set up a perimeter and Officer H. Grimes spotted them on Becker Drive.
Master Officer G. Morris and his dog, Champ, ran a track. Smith, of Roanoke Rapids, was found hiding in a Hunting Ridge Road backyard.
Smith was charged by Roanoke Rapids police with two counts of breaking, entering and larceny from a motor vehicle; two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle; two counts of damage to property; larceny of firearm; two counts possession of a stolen firearm and resisting/delaying/obstructing an officer.
Smith received a $50,000 bond on the Long Circle counts and a December 30 court date. Bond had not yet been set on the county charges.
Hasty said in the statement Smith and the other person with him, who was not caught, were both armed at the time of the crimes. Officers recovered two firearms from Smith when they took him into custody, one firearm which was taken in a breaking and entering earlier this month and one taken during this morning’s breaking and entering. “Individuals should use caution when confronting subjects that may be committing crimes,” Hasty said in the statement. “The victim yelled and then called the police department and got great descriptions and let the responding officers know what direction they were last seen running. This situation could have turned out bad, but it didn’t. Nobody was hurt during this encounter.”
Hasty said this afternoon the other alleged suspect was wearing dark clothing and was last seen headed toward Becker Drive.
The chief said this morning’s crimes were the latest in the city and count among the at least 80 vehicle break-ins the police department has been investigating since September 1. “We’re following up on the others.”
Hasty said investigators believe some of the the vehicle break-ins have been tied to drugs and money. They are also looking at other possible ties. Items including cash, guns, electronics and jewelry have been taken.
Hasty said in the statement investigators J. Davis and C. Babb are still following up on leads and possible ties to the rash of vehicle breaking and entering cases over the last several months. “The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected and additional subjects are expected to be charged. “
