Mrs. Evelyn Grant Doughtie, 90, widow of Emery W. Doughtie, departed this life on March 5, 2017 surrounded by the love of family and friends.

She is now celebrating with her Heavenly Father, who has been her divine influence since a very early age.
She was born on June 18, 1926 to Lena and William Grant in Northampton County. She was the youngest of the eight siblings.
Mrs. Doughtie graduated from East Carolina Teachers College certified in High School and Elementary Education. She retired after 30 years of dedicated service. She was past president of the Delta Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
She was a lady filled with joy and was always looking for ways to share her love for the Lord; her love of cooking and sharing delicious dishes with the hungry or the sick; using her beautiful musical talents of piano playing at church, Guardian Care or Becker Manor; transporting people to doctor appointments and serving on the Board at the Pregnancy Support Center.
She was a servant of the Lord who never said “no” to any chance to assist when a request was voiced for someone in need of her God given talents. There are many local residents in the area who have been recipients of a dish of her wonderful baked custard, chicken salad or apple jacks.
She was a devoted member of Lebanon United Methodist Church since birth until she married and then transferred to Rosemary United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. Some of her greatest joys came from keeping the nursery, presiding over and attending circle meetings, teaching Sunday School and assisting with food preparation for any occasion.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband; her sisters Virginia Wells, Mildred Bolton, Rebecca Guthrie, Edith Flythe and her brothers, W.W. Grant and David A. Grant.
She is survived by her son, Emery Grant Doughtie and wife, Yvonne and her daughter, Ann Doughtie Rogers and husband Danny. She also leaves to cherish her memory three special grandchildren whom she dearly loved to spend time with, Lauren Lee Doughtie, Brian Grant Cleveland and fiancé Jasmine Crocker and James “Jamie” Emery Cleveland and a precious great granddaughter, whom she adored, Aubrey Renae Cleveland. She is also survived by a brother, Marshall Grant of Garysburg and by numerous nieces and nephews including her special niece, Greta Flythe who was a constant companion and caretaker for many years.
A special thanks is extended to the professional caretakers who loved and cared for our Mother in her last few months. God sent you to us when we needed you and your compassionate care was such a blessing to us all.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemary United Methodist Church.
Interment will be private at Cedarwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the home. Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Rosemary United Methodist Church, 900 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
