The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department turned a suspicious fire in which an oily rag stuffed in a plastic bottle was found under a house on Woodlawn Street Friday to the police department.

Fire Chief Gary Corbet said the fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m. at 1105 Woodlawn Street. A passerby told firefighters he noticed smoke coming from a crawl space. An oily rag melted to a plastic bottle was found under the house. The bottle and its contents smelled of gasoline.
“There wasn’t much of a fire,” Corbet said. It only took a small amount of water to extinguish the fire.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Halifax County Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
