Four challengers seek three county commissioner seats

Four challengers will square off against three incumbent Halifax County commissioners in the May 8 Democratic Primary.

Rebecca Copeland of Enfield became the fourth challenger to enter the race on the final day of filing, which ended at noon.

The county commissioners race looks like this:

Incumbents Vernon Bryant, Rives Manning and Patrick Qualls have filed for re-election.

Challengers in May are Terry Buffaloe, James Mills, O.D. Sykes and Copeland.

Republican John Randolph Whichard is running for a board seat in November.

 

The remaining local, federal and state races shape up as follows:

 

District attorney District 7

Valerie Asbell — incumbent

Norlan Graves — challenger

 

Halifax County Clerk of Superior Court

Becky Spragins — incumbent

Michael Hawkins — challenger

 

Halifax County Sheriff

Wes Tripp — incumbent

Tyree Davis — challenger

 

Halifax County Board of Education

Claude Cooper — incumbent

Susie Lynch Evans — incumbent

Nicole Mills — challenger

Joyce Lashley — incumbent

Rachel Lynch — challenger

 

Weldon City Schools Board of Education — Election is on November 6

Edith Jenkins — challenger

Tanya Byrd-Robinson — incumbent

James “Tank” Williams — incumbent

Tiffany Hale — incumbent

 

United States House of Representatives District 1

G.K. Butterfield, the incumbent, will run unopposed in the primary.

He will face opposition from Republican Roger Allison in November.

 

North Carolina State Senate District 4

Milton “Toby” Fitch is running unopposed in the primary.

He will face opposition from Republican Richard Scott and Libertarian Jesse Shearin in November.

 

North Carolina House of Representatives District 27

Michael Wray — incumbent

Franklin Williams — challenger

The winner will face opposition from Republican Raymond Dyer in November.
