These were two of the highlights Halifax Economic Development Director Cathy Scott presented to commissioners today.

“This developer seems to be experienced,” Scott said in her presentation to the board, referring first to the mall. “They want to make it a thriving facility. The present owner was not able to get the mall where it needs to be.”

Scott said the developer plans to have retail and self-storage facilities at the building off East Tenth Street.

Scott did not release the name of the developer. “I haven’t had a meeting with them yet. I’ve had conversations with a representative.”

A meeting with the owner is planned in the near future, she told the board.

The mall was sold in 2014 with the hopes the new owner could revive the once thriving shopping center.

Meanwhile, Scott told commissioners a company known only as Project Ruther has made a second offer to purchase the Flambeau building with a 120-day due diligence period.

Flambeau has accepted the undisclosed offer, she said.

“There are a lot of conditions for it to happen,” Scott told the board. “They are still looking at other properties. State resources are going to be needed for this project to make this happen.”

She told commissioners the company interested in buying the building has not signed a contract but Flambeau has accepted the offer.

The company interested in buying the building is not similar to Flambeau, a plastics molding company, Scott said after the meeting.

The county is still actively working on the project, she said. “We’re going to need board support.”

Flambeau announced in January of 2014 a transfer of operations that resulted in the closure of its Weldon manufacturing facility and affected 122 employees.

Production and service for the customers provided from the Weldon plant were transferred to other Flambeau operations based on product type, asset requirements, and customer proximity.
