Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement investigators appeared before the Grand Jury today and returned true bills against Dontayvious Devonte Cotton.

The indictments against the 24-year-old man, also known as Moochie, charge him with four counts of murder; a count of robbery with a dangerous weapon and a count of burglary.

Cotton, who has two pending Halifax County court dates in May for charges unrelated to the Glenview crimes, was already in custody when served the orders of arrest and will remain in jail without opportunity for bond. He also has a pending court date in Northampton County this week.

Tripp said in the statement, “It’s important to state that the sheriff’s office along with the district attorney’s office have worked diligently on this case. Investigators, District Attorney Valerie Asbell and her assistants continue to work hand in hand in following up on leads as the investigation continues.”

Tripp declined to comment beyond the statement and directed questions to the district attorney’s office.

Asbell said, “Other than what is contained in the court file, the North Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct prevent me from commenting on any factors related to a pending case.”

Cotton becomes the fourth person to be indicted in the case where James and Janice Harris and James and Peggy Whitley were shot and killed as they played a friendly game of cards at the Harris residence in the Glenview community of the Enfield area in August.

Previously indicted were Matthew Simms, Keyon West and James Powell.

The indictments against those three gave a few more details of the case, saying the three men allegedly stole an assortment of handguns, shotguns and rifles from the Harris residence. The indictments also say the men allegedly committed first-degree burglary by entering the house while it was occupied by the two couples.

The crimes were committed, the indictment notes, through use of a dangerous weapon by each of the defendants.

The true bills returned on Simms, West and Powell included the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Prior to the certification of the true bills of indictment, the only information to be divulged in the case was that items of value were missing from the Harris residence and the motive was robbery.

The four were shot through a glass door while they sat playing cards at the dining room table. All the victims died at the table after they were shot multiple times.

Cotton’s previous record with the state Department of Public Safety shows charges of wanton injury to property and second-degree trespassing in Northampton County and possession of a counterfeit instrument in Guilford County.

He is tentatively scheduled to appear in court in Northampton County Thursday on charges of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury; two counts of second-degree trespassing and a count of misdemeanor larceny.

On May 9 in Halifax County he is tentatively scheduled to appear for driving while license revoked and unsafe passing.

On May 16 in Halifax County he is tentatively scheduled to appear for second-degree trespassing; driving while license revoked; reckless driving to endanger; fail to stop for stop sign; flee to elude arrest and two counts of resisting a public officer.
