RRPD to honor fallen officers in Centennial Park ceremony

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department will honor its three fallen officers as well as others who died in the line of duty in Halifax County.

The Fallen Officers Memorial will be at Centennial Park on Thursday, May 17 at 6 p.m.

In case of inclement weather the ceremony will move inside Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall.

Cary police Chief Anthony “Tony” Goodwin will be the guest speaker, Roanoke Rapids Chief Chuck Hasty said.

Goodwin, he said in a statement, “has a special connection to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department” as Clifton Massey, one of the city’s officers who died in the line of duty was his great uncle.

Hasty said the fallen officers will be honored through prayer and reading of scripture during the observance, which also commemorates National Law Enforcement Week.

“They gave the ultimate sacrifice by protecting their community,” Hasty said this afternoon. “We don’t need to forget the sacrifices they made to their community.”

The fallen Roanoke Rapids officers are Sergeant Calvin Edward Daniel; Massey and Willard Vaughan.

In addition the ceremony will honor five officers of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office — Deputy Sheriff William Goodwin; Deputy Sheriff Lofton Floyd; Deputy Sheriff William Pope; Deputy Sheriff James Perry Sr., and Deputy Sheriff Charlie Hawkins.

Honored from Enfield will be Tonya Gillikin; from the state Highway Patrol Raymond Worley and from the Scotland Neck Police Department Chief Andrew Moore and Chief Charles Dunn.
