A Roanoke Rapids police officer was injured this morning while trying to serve outstanding warrants.

Officer Chris Biggerstaff received cuts to his hand and injured his knee during a struggle with 34-year-old Calvin Lavon Rook.

Around 11:30 Biggerstaff spotted Rook outside his apartment on Becker Colony Drive and went to serve the warrants, which were court violations that included contempt.

While serving the warrants, Rook got into an altercation with the officer and then a struggle ensued. Rook fled. An ambulance took Biggerstaff to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment, Major Tommy Hathaway said.

Officer Scott Blythe and his dog Zeusa located Rook 25 minutes later hiding in a backyard of the apartment complex.

Rook faces charges of simple assault, escape from custody and resisting arrest.

Hathaway did not have the precise time of line of events but said based on the escape from custody count it appears Rook may have broken free from the officer before the struggle ensued.

Rook was jailed on $10,100 bond.
