Ducky Derby will be a weekend event this year that starts Friday, September 20, with a block party in Weldon and ends with the traditional festivities on September 21 that lead up to the rubber duck race on the Roanoke River.

According to a statement from the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, the events kick-off with the Rockin' Block Party and free ice cream in an event sponsored by the town of Weldon, WTRG and the chamber.

There will be free ice cream from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as Johnny Draper does his Friday Night Beach Blast from the First Media Radio complex on First Street in Weldon.

“This is a great way for folks to come to Weldon and enjoy ice cream, great music and some fun. It is a short walk to the river or to great restaurants like Jermonico’s and 51 Sycamore Restaurant. We welcome everyone to our beautiful town to see all that it has to offer,” said Mayor Julia Meacham.

Al Haskins, general manager of First Media Radio, welcomes everyone. “ We encourage everyone to bring a bag chair and enjoy the show.”

Ice cream will be provided by Doodlebug Donuts. “With over 30 varieties at the store we will bring a couple of surprises, even low sugar,” said Chea Peacock, owner of the shop that is opening soon on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in Roanoke Rapids.

The block party serves as the lead-in to Ducky Derby the next day, which begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The annual duck race will be at 2:30 p.m.

Ducky Derby will be held at River Falls Park in Weldon and will feature food vendors, crafts and amusement rides. There will be a stage with local musical talent and the chamber says there will be a twist added, which will be announced at a later date.

The cash prize for the winning duck has been increased to $2,000 this year. Tickets are available at the chamber office at 260 Premier Boulevard or at businesses with the Ducky Derby ticket sign.

Each ticket costs $5, with six tickets available for $25 and twenty five available for $100. All proceeds will benefit the Roanoke Valley Chamber programs including the Business-Education Partnership, Leadership Roanoke Valley and various programs used to support business in the Roanoke Valley.

Admission to the festival is free.
