The Weldon Police Department is looking for a man who allegedly damaged a coin machine in an attempt to steal money from it.

The Grant Park Laundry reported on July 30 a coin machine at its associated car wash had damage.

Police Chief Mark Macon said earlier that morning Officer Christopher Coley was on patrol in the Grant Park community of Weldon when he observed a suspicious person later identified as Damien Artis.

Artis, 25, of Aurelian Springs Road in Roanoke Rapids, had a cut on his hand and Coley took down some information. Followup by Captain James Avens as well as video evidence from the camera system at the laundry led police to obtain a warrant for Artis' arrest on a charge of breaking into a coin machine. The machine sustained $500 in damages.

Macon said Artis is also allegedly a suspect in other break-in and larcenies.

Artis, who frequents the Weldon area, is a dark-skinned black male standing approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 162 pounds.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
