The raise increases his salary to $90,000 a year, Mayor Emery Doughtie said following the meeting.
The raise was part of Scherer's agreement to come to Roanoke Rapids as he accepted the job for $5,000 less than former City Manager Paul Sabiston was making.
Doughtie said Scherer, who came to the city just as last August's flooding caused widespread damage in Roanoke Rapids, deserved the increase. “He came on right when the flooding hit. Instead of easing in he had to jump right in and deal with an emergency. He got a good chance to see how each employee acted in the community.”
Scherer, Doughtie said, has been proactive in dealing with city issues. “The city has been pleased with the services he has given us.”
The mayor said the city manager is looking for economic development opportunities within the city.
