Halifax County in a press release today explained the circumstances that knocked out telephone service, including the 911 system.

An early morning thunderstorm Monday damaged CenturyLink internal power equipment resulting in telephone service outages for all of the town of Halifax. That included the Halifax County 911 Center.

Emergency calls were routed to Northampton County while technicians repaired power issues.

Derek Kelly of CenturyLink said in the press release the company is upgrading the power plant to prevent a recurrence.

Service to the Halifax County 911 center was restored shortly before 10 a.m. Monday.
