Nine-hundred and thirteen dollars raised, 811 school items and 46 backpacks bought.

That's the tally of the bounty staff at Belmont Elementary School sorted this afternoon after staff from Texas Steakhouse delivered those items — items bought with proceeds from a fundraising yard sale.

The supplies that range from paper to pencils and notebooks to hand sanitizer represent a backpack for one child per classroom, Texas General Manager Melissa Hand said today.

Hand bought 21 backpacks and was donated another 21 as well receiving gift cards to make up the difference.

This shows the amount of supplies bought.

For third-grade teacher Kim Vincent, who also works at Texas, the supplies were appreciated. “Some (students) don't come with school supplies. It gives them extra incentive. This is a real school, community connection. We couldn't do it without my friends from Texas.”

Belmont Assistant Principal Tad Merritt described the gift as a community, business and school partnership. There are many of these partnerships within the community, he said.

For the teachers, he said, the supplies are a relief. The benefactors, he said, “Are not always the usual suspects, they're not always kids of low income. Sometimes it's kids whose parents hadn't had time to go shopping. Now they're prepared for day one.”

The backpacks.

The yard sale was the third installment of the restaurant's Texas Gives Back campaign and while it will be held again, Hand said the fourth installment will be an event at Halloween that will benefit Angel's Closet, particularly its food pantry.
