The Halifax County Sheriff's Office Thursday honored the memory of one of its retired canine deputies who died on July 3.

Sheriff Wes Tripp and fellow dog handlers presented Sergeant Greg Richardson with a plaque for the work Richardson's dog Doxie did before retiring in 2011.

“Doxie is best known for his dedicated work ethic and his willingness to work when ever called upon,” Tripp said. “No matter the time of the day, Doxie was ready and able.”

During Doxie’s career, the canine ran 168 tracks for suspects or missing persons, helped to seize more than $200,000 worth of money, property and drugs while working with local and federal agencies throughout the eastern part of North Carolina. “With such a busy work schedule, Doxie still managed to be presented to schools and churches more than 100 times for demonstrations. Doxie will be terribly missed with everlasting memories for Sergeant Richardson and every officer that ever worked with the duo.”
