A Maryland man died following a collision on Interstate 95 today after the car he was a passenger in was struck from behind by another vehicle.

Vehicles were at a standstill on the northbound lane of the interstate about 2.9 miles north of the Highway 561 exit in the Darlington area for an earlier minor wreck, according to Trooper W.T. Smith of the state Highway Patrol.

Mark David Cox, 58, of Laurel, Maryland, who died, was a backseat passenger on the right side of a 2013 Camry.

As vehicles sat still on the interstate, a minivan driven by Samuel Compton, 75, of Adrian, Michigan, struck the rear of the Camry.

Smith said Compton failed to reduce speed and struck the Camry in the rear going anywhere between 65 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour at the time of impact.

The impact forced the Camry off the highway. The point of impact was the back right side of the Camry where Cox was seated.

After striking the Camry, Compton's minivan struck the rear of another vehicle driven by Brian Flythe of Conway. The impact forced Flythe's vehicle off the highway.

Compton's minivan overturned and came to an upright rest.

Five people were treated and released following the crash, which occurred shortly before 4:15 p.m.

Smith said Cox was pinned in the vehicle for about an hour and died at the scene.

Investigation of the crash by Smith and troopers R.P. Dennis, S. Richardson and N.T. Hanline led Compton to be charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He has a November 11 court date.
