A Thelma area man survived a crash into Roanoke Rapids Lake after hydroplaning and going through the bridge rail on Little Deep Creek Road this afternoon.

Trooper J.D. Warren of the state Highway Patrol said Ian Bundy, 22, was heading toward Thelma Road, traveling too fast for existing conditions as water ponded on the bridge from afternoon rains shortly before 3 p.m. Slick tires on Bundy's 2006 Toyota pickup created a condition where his truck ran off the road to the right and struck the rail.

The damaged rail sits on the trailer.

Bundy's truck landed in what Warren estimated to be about 5 feet of water. He was able to escape from the truck and was checked out by EMS at the scene.

West & Sons Garage got his pickup out of the water.

Warren cited Bundy, of Little Deep Creek Road, for exceeding safe speed and improper tires. He has a November 25 court date.

State Department of Transportation bridge maintenance workers were putting a new rail  up as of this report.
