A judge who is overseeing the Hoke County Board of Education versus North Carolina case, a case that includes Halifax County schools, has called for a hearing on November 13 and 14 to review the case.

Specifically, Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard E. Manning Jr. on November 14 calls for a progress report on Halifax County schools for the 2012-2013 year, according to a copy of the September 16 order.

The hearing was noted in a letter to the county school system by state Board of Education Chairman William Cobey Jr. in the section of his correspondence dealing with the state's readiness to fulfill its obligations under the order to assist the school system.

The purpose of the hearing, Manning notes in his order, is related, “To the issue of whether or not our school children are obtaining a sound, basic education as defined in Leandro I and whether or not our school children are being provided with the minimal educational resources required for constitutional compliance in Leandro II.”

Manning begins the hearing on November 13 at 10 a.m. with a review of statewide ABC results for 2012-2013.

A review of ACT, PLAN and EXPLORE tests is also scheduled that day as is 2012 reading and math assessments.

Beginning Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Manning plans to hear reports on the Turnaround High School and Middle projects for 2011-2012.

Thursday also includes the review of selected financial data, including the 2012-2013 Halifax County Schools progress report.
