Wayne Smith won the Roanoke Rapids City Council seat Greg Lawson will vacate in a landslide, collecting 79.03 percent of the votes over his opponent, Gerald “Jerry” McDaniel.

According to unofficial results, McDaniel got 20.97 percent of the votes. The percentages equate to a 524-139 victory for Smith.

“I just want to thank the people in the district for having a lot of confidence in me,” Smith said this evening. “I think we'll carry on the work that Mr. Lawson did.”

Smith said one of his goals is to work more closely with the Roanoke Avenue Business Alliance and see the continued work of trying to refinance theater debt through. “I want to work with the county and Cathy Scott and do something with the WestPoint plant, like heavy industrial use.”

He said he wants to see council continue to do the work it has done in the past. “I'm satisfied and happy with the way the mayor has conducted the business of the city.”

The large margin of victory surprised Smith. “I didn't think it would be that big of a margin. I'm happy and appreciative of the people in District 2 and thank each one of them.”

Mayor Emery Doughtie ran opposed in this election and took 97.79 percent of the vote. There were 25 write-ins, which took 2.21 percent of the vote.

Councilwoman Suetta Scarbrough also ran unopposed and collected 97.01 percent of the vote. There were 12 write-ins collecting 2.99 percent of the vote.
