Chuck Hasty, an investigations captain in the Northampton County Sheriff's Office, has opted not to file for sheriff in Halifax County.

Hasty was widely speculated to run in a crowded May primary field with current Sheriff Wes Tripp, Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon, former Halifax County Sheriff's Office Detective Tyree Davis and James Warren, a former high-ranking officer with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office .

“I want to work for all citizens,” Hasty said today in Jackson. “I think the sheriff, as a law enforcement officer, should serve all citizens without regard to social and economic status. I thought the whole political process was getting in the way of friendships and working together as law enforcement departments.”

Hasty said his new duties in Northampton, where he is in charge of criminal investigations, also played a big factor. “I can help focus on helping Sheriff (Jack) Smith build confidence in the sheriff's office. I want to make things better for the citizens of Northampton County.”

Hasty had considered running as an independent in the primary. “I feel it should be a non-partisan office, like the judges are.”
