The county has chosen Enfield's public works director to head its Public Utilities Department.

Halifax County Manager Tony Brown announced in a statement Greg Griffin will begin his duties as public utilities director January 15. The announcement comes after Gwen Matthews retired in November.

Brown said in the statement Griffin has extensive water, wastewater and solid waste experience, “making him a great fit for the job.”

He graduated from East Carolina University and holds numerous certifications for water and wastewater treatment, pesticides and holds CPR certification.

He is a member of the Enfield Volunteer Fire Department.

“We are excited to have Greg sign on as public utilities director,” Brown said. “He will be a great fit for our team of department heads here in Halifax County and will also bring local knowledge to the table. I look forward to working with him.”

Griffin will be responsible for the management of water, wastewater and solid waste divisions of the county, including the landfill, transfer station, convenience sites and all water lines owned by the county.

Griffin will keep his residence in Enfield where he lives with his wife and daughter.
