Tripp announces intent to file Monday

Incumbent Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp announced today he will file to run as a candidate for sheriff in the May 6 Democratic Primary.

He will file Monday at noon.

Tripp provided the media the following background information, divided into professional and personal accomplishments:

Wes Tripp the professional

•In 1984, at age 19 Tripp was hired by Sheriff W.C. “Bill” Bailey as a Jailer. A Basic Jailer Certification was obtained.

•In 1985 Tripp was promoted to Deputy Sheriff and completed Basic Law Enforcement training at the North Carolina Justice Academy.

•Since 1985 Tripp was promoted by sheriffs W.C. “Bill” Bailey, M.L. Stallings, and Jeff Frazier.

•Tripp has served the community and Sheriff’s Office as a uniformed deputy, uniformed sergeant, detective, uniformed lieutenant, detective lieutenant, and major of the detective and narcotic divisions.

•In 2008 Sheriff Jeff Frazier promoted Tripp to Chief Deputy, overseeing all operations of the Sheriff’s Office

•Tripp served for several years as President and member of the Halifax County Law Enforcement Association, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving youth in the community.

•In April 2013, Sheriff Jeff Frazier recommended Tripp to the County Commissioners to serve the remainder of his term, citing his own preparation of six years of his Chief Deputy, and overall experience that qualified Tripp for the responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office.

•During the course of his service, Tripp has completed thousands of hours of continuing education and in service training.

• Tripp holds a North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.

•Tripp is a North Carolina state certified detective, with the vast majority of his service time being that of investigations. As an investigator and investigator lieutenant, Tripp’s specialty was crimes against children and homicide.

• Tripp has administrated and supervised over a narcotics unit that has been successful in the largest federal drug campaign in Halifax County history.

•Under Tripp’s supervision, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has been acknowledged as having the area's highest overall clearance rates in crime, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

•On August 5t, 2013 the Halifax County Board of Commissioners appointed Tripp as Sheriff of Halifax County.

•Since the appointment as Tripp has organized county-wide community meetings to encourage public feedback, identify community needs, and answer any concerned citizens questions.

• Tripp has reallocated resources, implementing new processes for obtaining pistol permits and concealed weapon permits, resulting in better consideration for residents cost and efficiency for the Sheriff’s Office.

• Tripp has implemented a “Church Watch” program as well as continued Neighborhood Watch programs. A special public housing initiative has successfully been put in place, in coordination with the Roanoke Chowan Housing Authority.

•Wes Tripp has served in local Law Enforcement for 29 years. After working in every department within the Sheriff’s Office, working his way up through the ranks, and learning from experiences of three different sheriffs. Wes Tripp is prepared and experienced.

•Tripp graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1982

•Tripp has been married for 29 years to Karen Wilson Tripp, formerly of Darlington

•Wes and Karen Tripp have a son, Wes Tripp III, who is attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

•The Tripps are active members of the East Tenth Street Church of Christ in Roanoke Rapids.

• Tripp is a 3rd Degree Mason in the Roanoke Rapids and Halifax lodges and an active member of the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club.

 

•Tripp enjoys time with his family and friends, cooking, and has participated in fundraisers for years.
