A 27-year-old Roanoke Rapids man, stopped by a state Highway Patrol trooper for a burned out headlight, was arrested Friday night for marijuana possession.

Lieutenant George Evans of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Deputy P.W. Massey responded to Huckleberry Bottom Road to assist Trooper L. Bynum on a vehicle stop.

Bynum stopped Kenneth Christy around 10:30 p.m. and reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Bynum handed investigation of the marijuana over to the sheriff's office. Evans said when Massey inquired about the marijuana, Christy reportedly handed it over to him — 72 grams.

Massey charged Christy with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Christy received a $2,500 bond and a March 19 court date.
