Wilson man dies after hitting icy patch

A Wilson man died this morning after hitting ice and losing control of his vehicle on Highway 43.

According to a report by Trooper T.D. “Bo” Forsht of the state Highway Patrol, Larry Wayne Jones, 58, was traveling north towards Roanoke Rapids when he struck an icy patch of road in the Littleton area shortly before 6 a.m.

He lost control of the vehicle, hit a mailbox and then collided with a tree. He was traveling an estimated 55 miles per hour when he hit the ice on a straight road with a slight grade.

He coded on the way to the hospital.
