Results of last Tuesday's primary are now official.

Halifax County Board of Elections Director Kristin Scott said no results changed following today's canvassing.

The primary saw a record number of Halifax County voters take advantage of the week-long early voting window with 3,015 going to one of two polling sites to cast ballots. In the last primary, voters had a two-week window. “It surpassed previous numbers as far as our sites were smaller. It used to be our office and two additional sites,” she said.

Voter turnout was 34.8 percent.

She said a reporting delay was caused by a new system. “It was a matter of getting it uploaded and displayed. We were working with the state throughout the night.”

The election saw a slate of anti-school merger candidates win, who now face Republican opposition in the November general election. It also saw voters from across four counties elect a new district attorney to the new Judicial District 6, with current Judicial District 6B District Attorney Valerie Asbell beating Halifax County District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey.

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp defeated challenger Tyree Davis to face Republican James Warren and, presumably, Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon in November.
