Charles Waverly Pearson, 51, of Roanoke Rapids, turned himself into the Northampton County Sheriff's Office today and was released from custody on a $30,000 bond, the sheriff's office confirmed.
A source close to the case said Pearson reportedly used the money to buy furnishings for his house, chocolates and pay for classes that led to his certification in sports management.
The investigation, which covers a time period from 2011 to 2013, accounts for approximately $30,861 that Pearson, who was the squad's finance officer for three years, allegedly converted to his own use.
Those methods of conversion, according to the April 28 true bills of indictment filed in the Northampton County Clerk of Courts Office, range from cashing the squad's bank checks to using its First Citizens, Lowe's and Staples credit cards.
He was indicted on 26 counts each of embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense.
The amounts range from a squad check of $26.50 allegedly being cashed to purchases being charged to the Staples card of $8,826. The First Citizens card amassed $4,460 in purchases. The Lowe's card totaled $3,865 in purchases from the home improvement retail store.
A court date has not been assigned.
