Temperatures are expected to be in the 80s and about a dozen food vendors will be on hand for National Night Out Tuesday evening.

The event, sponsored jointly by the Roanoke Rapids and Weldon police departments and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, starts at Doyle Field next to T.J. Davis with the North Tower Band playing throughout the evening until the event's close at 9 p.m.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Andy Jackson said there will be inflatable attractions for children. “There'll be plenty of food so people can come out and enjoy the band. It looks like the temperatures will be in the 80s so it won't be as hot as it's been in the past.”

The night is devoted to take a stand against crime and Roanoke Rapids joins other communities across the nation celebrating the event. “It gives everybody a chance to get out and interact with law enforcement and interact with other local agencies. It's a good time to have fun and share ideas.”

Jackson said the coordination between the sheriff's office and Weldon has gone well. “Law enforcement agencies have to work together. In neighboring cities and countywide, crime is not an isolated problem. It's everybody's problem.”

In case of rain, North Tower will perform at Kirkwood Adams.
