Deputy Chief Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said the crash occurred just after 6:30 this morning in the southbound lane near the 172 mile marker in the city limits.
A passenger in the car in which the girl was in was airlifted and was in critical condition, Jackson said.
Occupants of another car involved were being treated and were reported to be in stable condition. The occupants of that car are from the Tampa, Florida, area.
Jackson said the state Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
Trooper J.D. Warren said it appeared the 2011 Toyota from Florida was traveling in the left southbound lane when it was hit from the rear by the 2011 Toyota from New York, in which the child was a passenger.
The Florida Toyota ran off the roadway while the New York Toyota struck a tree, trapping one adult and ejecting the child.
Jackson said names are not being released at this point.
