An update given to the Halifax Community College Board of Trustees Tuesday shows the school has received more than $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Predominantly Black Institutions Formula Grant.

HCC Director of Title III Sponsored and Special Projects Dan Lovett also told the board the school has provided matching funds of more than $459,000.

In his presentation, Lovett discussed the array of projects from 2010-15 that the funding has assisted with across campus.

These include:

• Facility and technology upgrades to the auditorium, rooms in Building 400 and 500, as well as classrooms in the Dr. Phillip W. Taylor Complex

• Endowment matching fund contributions, providing $135,000 to the endowment fund

• Educational equipment including welding and science equipment, library books, upgrades to industrial maintenance training equipment and software to enhance Blackboard

• Director of Development position filled, resulting in $835,000 in grants for advanced manufacturing; $150,000 for the walking trail and $120,000 for the NC Back-to-Work grant

• Community outreach, enrollment and retention initiatives including new student and parent orientations, accelerated summer enrichment programs, math and science camps, and community outreach and listening tours

• Cultural activities including women’s conferences, men’s summits, a speaker series and lyceum events

• Campus security including classroom locks and an emergency alert system

• Faculty and professional development including Leadership Institute classes, grant management training, enhancement of Learning Communities and professional development workshops.

In another matter, HCC President Ervin Griffin Sr. discussed the economic value of HCC as described in a recent economic impact study.

The study shows that HCC’s payroll amounted to $11.4 million during the analysis year of 2012-2013.

The net impact of the college’s operations in the service area was about $13.3 million in added regional income, which is equivalent to creating 359 jobs.

Over the years, the accumulated contribution of alumni currently employed in the service area workforce amounted to $56.8 million in regional income, which is equivalent to creating 1,197 new jobs.

“That shows you the value over time and the investment really is paying off,” said Griffin.

The added regional income of $70.1 million created by HCC is equal to about 5.2 percent of the total gross regional product of the HCC service area and is equivalent to creating 1,556 new jobs.
