The City County Drug Task Force is now in its second quarter.

“It's progressing really well,” Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty said this week. “Weldon should be coming in shortly.”

The cases investigated in the three months of task force's existence, Hasty said, are “very solid cases. It's been very worthwhile.”

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said, “I'm just proud of the fact two agencies are working together to get the job done.”

Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon said he has committed an officer to the task force. “I think it's a good idea,” he said. “Working together works. It gives us an opportunity to increase the availability of manpower and resources to tackle drugs in our community.”

Today, Hasty released the first quarter numbers:

• 184 charges that are broken down to 59 misdemeanor drug counts, 63 felony drug counts and 62 criminal charges

• Charged a total of 75 suspects

• Seized 1,265.5 grams of marijuana worth an estimated $6,327

• Seized 130.5 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine worth an estimated $7,830

• Seized 47 dosage units of heroin and 99 dosage units of medication

• Served 29 search warrants, seized $ 20,856 in currency and have worked on several federal drug cases

“This combined effort has reduced the cost of each department by focusing on the combination of resources and not duplicated work by each individual department,” Hasty said.
