James Varnedore of Roanoke Rapids is celebrating his good fortune after winning the first top prize of $1 million in the new Million Dollar Fever scratch-off game.

A Roanoke Rapids woman surrendered to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office today and faces numerous counts related to the alleged theft of $1,800 worth of lottery tickets from the store where she was employed.

A $1 million Ruby Red 7’s scratch-off ticket purchased in Roanoke Rapids was claimed Tuesday, the North Carolina Education Lottery confirmed in a statement today.
