The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell Harris:
On Wednesday around 3 a.m. Deputy J. Velez stopped a vehicle driven by a man identified as Devante Jerome Williams on Interstate 95 northbound near the 156 mile marker for a safe movement violation of following too close.
Williams, 30, of Norfolk, was driving with a female passenger.
Velez requested a canine officer and narcotics Agent B.J. Murphy and Raven arrived.
A positive alert for the presence of narcotics was given by Raven and a search was conducted.

A bag was located that contained a Mason jar with marijuana and a clear bag with marijuana, approximately 416 grams.
A pistol and AR-style pistol were also located. Williams is a convicted felon not allowed to possess firearms.
He was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by felon, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, possessing marijuana drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed gun and resisting a public officer.
Williams has a Friday district court date.

Weldon stop
On Wednesday shortly before midnight Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin conducted a motor vehicle stop on Country Club Road in Weldon for a window tint violation.
Martin spoke with the driver, identified as Shamarque Adrian Mitchell, 20, of Roanoke Rapids. During the stop, Martin established probable cause and a search was conducted.
During the search, a Glock 20 10mm handgun with an extended magazine and a Glock 17 9mm handgun were located concealed in the driver’s area of the vehicle.

A prescription pill bottle with the label removed was located containing Oxycodone along with a bag containing 120 grams of marijuana, 4.5 grams of cocaine, two digital scales and other items consistent with narcotic sales.
Martin arrested and charged Mitchell with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sale and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of schedule II controlled substance, felony maintain a vehicle for a controlled substance, two counts of carrying a concealed gun, two counts of possession of marijuana paraphernalia, three counts of drug paraphernalia and a window tint violation.
Mitchell has a February 27 district court date.
