A 41-year-old Roanoke Rapids man was assigned a public defender today after his arrest on drug, weapon, and traffic charges Thursday night, according to eCourts records.
Tyrone Jermaine Newell was no longer listed in Halifax County Detention Records today.
He was charged during a saturation patrol by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office around 10 p.m. in the area of Highway 158.
Corporal J. Velez, Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin, Deputy D. Bybee and Lieutenant R. Elder were conducting the patrol when Elder stopped Newell for an equipment violation.

A stolen firearm and cocaine were located inside the vehicle. The stolen firearm had been entered into NCIC after a matter in the Highway 48 area in March of 2024.
Newell was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm by felon.
He was also cited with a North Carolina Uniform Citation for a window tint violation and possessing an open container.
His next district court date is May 22.
