The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell Harris:

Chase

While patrolling the South Weldon area at approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, Deputy J. Morales ran a vehicle registration plate and the owner came back showing they had an active warrant for an arrest.

Hanif Abdul Evans, 43, of Weldon, had an outstanding warrant for financial fraud.

Evans was stopped at Washington Avenue and fled when the deputy requested his driver’s license.

Morales chased Evans to Pine Street where he abandoned the vehicle and fled into the woods. Morales apprehended Evans, who was arrested and served the outstanding warrant. The deputy also charged him with felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, resisting/delaying/obstructing, reckless driving to endanger, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Evans is no longer listed in detention center records and has an October 29 district court date for the outstanding warrant and an October 22 district court date for the deputy's charges.

Stolen firearm

On Friday around 5:30 p.m., Deputy D. Bybee conducted an enforcement stop on Carver Street in Roanoke Rapids for a violation.

Aki Thomas, 21, of Seaboard was identified as the driver.

During a probable cause search, Bybee located marijuana and two firearms, one of which was reported stolen from Westmoreland County, Virginia, in February of 2023.

Thomas was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

He was released from custody and has an October 23 district court date.
