What Weldon Fire Chief Rusty Bolt described as straight line winds between Mackie Street and Cofield Funeral Home have downed trees and power lines in the town.

The storm came through around 6:45 this evening and knocked a tree into a house causing damage to the roof system and the corner.

A tree was also knocked over the railroad tracks at Poplar Street.

Storms are expected to last until late this evening and according to Dominion Energy’s outage map more than 1,600 customers are without power in Halifax and Northampton counties.

Bolt said two streets are closed between Second and Third streets at Poplar and on Fourth Street between Poplar and Chestnut where the tree slammed into the house.

There are power lines down behind the former Blue Flame convenience store.

On County Road a tree fell on top of a car and damaged the house.

The fire chief said no one was at home when the tree struck the house, which is used by its owners when they visit the area.
