No charges will be filed in a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred the afternoon of October 16 near the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and East Fifth Street, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.
Chief Lawrence Wiggins said in a statement Tuesday the investigation “did not yield any results that would indicate a crime or infraction had occurred at the time of the collision. Therefore, no additional actions will be taken by the RRPD concerning this collision.”
Wiggins said the investigation into the death of a 16-year-old boy identified as Dustin Maurice was conducted by the police department with assistance from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. “In addition to the at-scene investigation, (investigators) sought additional information stored on the subject vehicle’s electronic data recorder. No event data was recorded at the time of the incident. There is no evidence that the EDR was faulty or inoperative.”
The chief said members of the department’s command staff have met with representatives of all involved to discuss the findings. “Undoubtedly, everyone involved had their life changed in ways most cannot imagine,” Wiggins said. “My thoughts and prayers are with all who were involved.”
Maurice was a former student in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District, and his obituary posting said, “Dustin was passionate about art and drawing, and was good with his hands. In addition to his artwork, he was also mechanically-inclined and loved to tinker on motors and put them back together again.”
