A convicted felon from South Carolina was arrested and charged Tuesday night with possession of a weapon and simple possession of marijuana following a stop on Interstate 95.
Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Lamont Kelson, 33, of Beaufort, was stopped around 11 p.m. by Corporal R. Lafayette in the southbound lane near the 168 mile marker. The stop was for a traffic violation.
After speaking with the occupants, deputies developed probable cause and conducted a vehicle search. During the search, deputies located two bags of marijuana along with a firearm allegedly in Kelson’s possession.

According to eCourts records, Kelson was charged with possession of a Taurus GX4 and had been previously convicted of felony assault, assault and battery, and aggravated assault. Kelson pleaded guilty on March 8, 2012, and was sentenced to eight years.
He was not listed in detention records as of this report. He has a January 13 district court date in Halifax County.
