Halifax County Commissioner Jimmie Silver has been appointed to the North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission.
The commission seeks to ensure the continued use of sound sentencing practices in the state. “We are confident that the knowledge and experience that you have acquired throughout your career will be extremely beneficial to accomplishing the duties required of the commission,” said Executive Director Michelle Hall in a letter to Silver announcing the appointment.
The commission is an independent body that serves the North Carolina General Assembly in an advisory capacity and is made up of 29 representatives from the three branches of government, all areas of the criminal justice system, and from the public.
It was originally created in 1990 in response to a need to revise the state’s sentencing laws and was subsequently mandated with the ongoing duties of making policy recommendations, tracking legislation, and monitoring sentencing practices and correctional resources.
The commission meets four times a year.
