Donations are being accepted to support Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Corporal M. Kalkbrenner as he clips in again to take part in the annual Law Enforcement United bicycle ride from North Carolina to Washington, D.C. for Police Week 2026.

Officers from Greenville, Raleigh, New Bern, Wilson, and Shelby will be making the more than 650-mile ride.

Major Anzell Harris said the minimum needed per rider is $1,750 and donations can be made at this link

Checks made payable to Law Enforcement United can be dropped off at the sheriff’s office on Ferrell Lane in Halifax. The deadline for donations is March 10.

The 2025 ride raised more than $500,000 for families of fallen officers.

The Road To Hope ride is part of a nationwide event held by Law Enforcement United, a nonprofit formed in 2009 by law enforcement officers from across the nation to honor fallen law enforcement officers and financially support the families of officers who have died in the line of duty.

This will be Kalkbrenner's seventh time riding to honor those who have died in the line duty.  Last year, he rode in honor of Deputy Sheriff William McKinley Goodwin, who was killed in the line of duty on March 2, 1969.

Kalkbrenner will again honor Goodwin and will ride with the fallen deputy’s end of watch bracelet on his bike.

Goodwin was the first Black deputy in the sheriff’s office.

He died on March 2, 1969, when his patrol car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing on Rural Paved Road 1423 near Halifax.

Goodwin was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office for only five months He had previously served with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department for one year.

This ride honors all fallen officers and supports charities to include: Concerns of Police Survivors, the Officer Down Memorial Page, and the Spirit of Blue Foundation.
