A man wanted for a break-in at Chaloner Middle School last month was arrested Thursday night, cowering in a closet at his mother’s house, Roanoke Rapids police said today.
Jermaine Lamont Hale, 23, was jailed on $190,000 bond and has an April 19 court date, Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said.
He faces charges of three counts first-degree burglary, two counts of larceny, one count of felony conspiracy, one count of elude arrest, one count possession of stolen property and one count possession of a firearm by a felon.
Hale was arrested following a tip from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Bondarek said.

Working with the sheriff’s office, detectives Charles Vaught, Corey Dixon and Frankie Griffin went to the home of Hale’s mother on Melody Lane, which is in the Lincoln Heights community. “He was found to be cowering in his mother’s closet,” Bondarek said.
His arrest ended a search for the Roanoke Rapids man who is suspected of being in a vehicle which backed into a Roanoke Rapids patrol car last month.
Sergeant Perry Parks was responding to a call in the South Rosemary area about a wanted person and saw a person running across Roanoke Avenue in the 1900 block.
At some point during the pursuit the man, thought to be Hale, got in a car and a chase ensued.
The chase ended at a mobile home park in the South Rosemary area and a person, believed to be Hale, jumped out.
At the conclusion of the chase a patrol car was hit and sustained minor damage, Bondarek said.
Hale, who has a previous criminal record, was also wanted for a break-in at the school along with Clarence Burgess.
Burgess, 25, who was charged in the New Republic and First Citizens bank robberies, and Hale, face charges of breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen property and felony conspiracy at Chaloner Middle School.
Burgess was also charged with felony possession of stolen property in the Forest Hills burglary. Hale, 23, was charged with second-degree burglary, possession of stolen goods and felony larceny in that crime.
Roanoke Rapids police responded to a silent alarm at Chaloner Middle School and Officer Terrence Tyler spotted a suspicious vehicle leaving the area.
Bondarek said the vehicle took off and at the end of the chase the driver, Hale, jumped and ran.
Burgess was taken into custody and jailed on $100,000 bond. The property belonging to the school, computer equipment, was recovered. The police department has asked the district attorney’s office to revoke Burgess’s bank robbery bond.
Bondarek said sometime after his arrest on the bank robbery charges in December, Burgess was released from jail on $8,000 bond after it was reduced from $1 million.
When he was arrested on the bank robbery charges, Burgess was abusive, made threats against police and used racial slurs as he was taken into custody.
A magistrate gave Burgess 30 days in jail for contempt of court.
