A Halifax man who refused to stop for a deputy today was arrested after a chase into the county seat from Weldon.

Lieutenant Chuck Hasty of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Emerson Carroll tried to stop a truck for speeding but the driver, Russell Anderson Ferrell, refused to do so.

Ferrell continued on Highway 301 South towards Halifax at speeds of 85 to 90 miles per hour, almost causing a crash. He continued through the town of Halifax and turned onto Highway 561 and then onto a dirt farm path where he jumped out of the truck and ran into the woods.

Halifax County deputies, the North Carolina Highway Patrol and North Carolina Wildlife officers set up in the area and called in bloodhounds from the North Carolina Department of Correction in Tillery and Warrenton.

Sheriff Jeff Frazier spotted  Ferrell running in a field off Highway 561 as the bloodhounds continued to track the man, who was arrested.

Ferrell was charged with felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, driving while license revoked and resisting a public officer.

Ferrell’s court date is June 8 and he was placed in the Halifax County Jail under a $1,500 bond.
