The week of May 23 through 29 has been declared Hurricane Preparedness Week 2010.

The National Weather Service, the American Red Cross, Emergency Management officials and the media all work together to educate the community on the dangers of hurricanes.

It is important to understand the difference between a watch and a warning when issued by the National Weather Service in order to properly protect your family and property.

A watch is issued when there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24 to 36 hours.  A warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected in 24 hours or less.

The time is now to plan and prepare for a hurricane.

Citizens are encouraged to learn about their community’s risk for hurricanes, develop an evacuation plan and discuss both with the entire household.  Assembling a disaster supply kit is also encouraged and it is recommended to have enough supplies to last three days.

For more information on hurricanes, assembling your disaster supply kit or how to protect your home, please contact Tina Hinton, emergency management coordinator, at 252-583-2031.
